Dr Ang’s message is, “If you’re at risk of glaucoma, you don’t have to wait until you have symptoms before taking action. If you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma, you can still take action to give your mainstream drops-and-ops treatments the best chance of success.” His advice is comprehensive— heads up if you play a wind instrument, sleep on your face, or wear swimming goggles. His five key pillars of proactive glaucoma care are exercise, stress management, sleep, diet and nutrition, and a new-to-me concept, neuroprotection for glaucoma. Neuroprotection gets its own section which lists vulnerable components of the brain’s vascular and nervous system associated with glaucoma together with nutrients that support them and botanical extracts and minerals in which the nutrients occur. Dr Ang contends that although the nutrients are not part of mainstream glaucoma treatment, evidence that they work is persuasive. Two case studies and a pilot study make a convincing case for the Nutravision supplement that he has developed, but they’re not a sales pitch. The main text ends with a bullet-point summary of the book. Appendices provide resources for help and support, an aide memoire for putting Dr Ang’s recommendations into practice, FAQs, what to ask your consultant, and selected references.
