As a result, most clinical studies on macular pigment and central visual function, including the landmark Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS 2) used 10 mg lutein, which is 5x to 10x the average daily intake. These studies confirmed that this specific lutein dose was highly effective at increasing macular pigment density (MPOD) and supporting macular health with age.

2. Why 40 mg Lutein May Be Counterproductive

a) More Lutein ≠ More Benefit

If 10 mg lutein helps increase MPOD and improve vision, shouldn't 40 mg help four times as much? Clinical data suggests otherwise.

A meta-analysis published in Ophthalmic Research examined the role of different lutein doses in improving MPOD and visual function. The researchers found that a daily lutein dose of 10 mg was just as effective as higher doses for macular degeneration. Higher doses of lutein did not result in a statistically superior improvement in pigment density or visual acuity.

Essentially, 10 mg reached the therapeutic ceiling for most people; anything beyond that may simply be "padding" a label with a higher number that your body doesn't actually utilise for better vision.

b) 40 mg Lutein = Uncertain Safety

Overall, lutein is a safe ingredient to take, with the long-term safety of 10 mg now very well established. But for much higher doses like 40 mg, we simply don’t have the same level of safety data yet

c) More Lutein = No Space for Other Nutrients

There is also a practical side to supplements: capsule space. When a brand chooses to use an excessive dose of one ingredient, this means that other critical ingredients for vision support, whether for macular degeneration or glaucoma, will either be underdosed or omitted altogether
